Are there differences between different types of nonprofits?
Absolutely. If you go to the website for the Internal Revenue Service www.irs.gov, you can follow a link to information about Tax Exempt Organizations. Some organizations do not qualify as charities and therefore donations cannot be designated as charitable contributions. Another thing to watch: Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT). A key condition is that the nonprofit must use 'substantially all-volunteer' efforts while fundraising, otherwise the nonprofit might be hit with a tax bill for UBIT. Check with your accountant for details.

What types of nonprofits qualify for help? Which do not?
Any nonprofit may use the self-publishing tools except for political purposes. In fundraising, some types of organizations qualify as charities while others do not. Determinations are made by the Internal Revenue Service.
Most likely to succeed as Local4All fundraising partners:
  • Charitable Organizations - 501(c)3
  • Social Welfare Organizations - 501(c)4
  • Labor & Agricultural Organizations - 501(c)5
  • Business League Organizations - 501(c)6
  • Fraternal Societies - 501(c)8; 501(c)10
  • Veterans' Organizations - 501(c)19; 501(c)23
Least likely:
  • Employee Associations
  • Political Organizations
  • Social Clubs

What is the up-front cost for nonprofits to participate in fundraising?
There is no up-front cost.

Is there a charge to post events with the calendar tool?
No, there is no charge to use this tool.

Are online brochures and directory listings free for nonprofits?
Yes. Since volunteers or your staff will be adding the content, Local4All donates the use of this space as a community service.

Why can't you make everything free?
In some aspects, nonprofits are difficult to distinguish from for-profit companies. Since job ads and other classified ads are part of "doing the day-to-day business" of a nonprofit, we treat both equally. We suggest a Local4All.com fundraising program to offset these costs.

Can you help us find volunteers?
Successful recruiting is normally marked by:
  • having multiple ways for volunteers to find you, and
  • having a relevant message when they arrive
. One example is to schedule a fundraiser 'event' around 'recruiting' and then find a local speaker to fit the topic. While setting up the program, let the speaker guide you in recruiting for that event. The speaker-to-be gains credibility while you gain volunteers.

What online tools do you recommend for nonprofits?
The calendar, message boards, social services listings, and local government tools are free and easy. Most forms can be accessed through the Sitemap link in the top navigation bar.
IMPORTANT: Copying and editing functions are ONLY available if a user logs in before completing a form. It's a step that is easy but often overlooked.

How do we start fundraising?
A recent revision in our form makes it even easier to get started. When registering, a business person can place a zero (0) in the form where it asks for a nonprofit to be designated for part of the proceeds. By doing so, we know that the nonprofit is not yet on our list of registered recipient organizations and appropriate payment instructions are printed on the confirmation page.
