Armstrong Trail: On-Street Parking is Free/Easy

This area of the Armstrong Trail has easy and free street-side parking adjacent to the trail.  If you haven't yet planned to stop by the courthouse and look at the War Memorial Wall, you should do that before you leave town.  shURL: http://m37.local4all.com

Talking points with older kids:
  • French and Indian War 1754-1760 - Did you know that George Washington was shot at and missed within 50 miles of here, several months before this war started?
  • Sept 1756 - Did you know the first military medal ever awarded in what would become the United States of America is the Kittanning Medal?  Did you know the Indians had pushed the frontier almost all the way back to Philadelphia?  Do you know what provoked the settlers and military commanders enough to fight back in Kittanning?
  • May 1792 - Did you know that Massy Harbison was kidnapped by Indians and escaped from their overnight camp carrying her infant child?  She knew they would track her but outsmarted them on the first day and managed to get back to civilization on her own, after five days and 45 miles through untamed forest, barefoot.  Eventually, Massy and her husband had nine children and her descendants love telling the story (which you can find in the Kittanning library).
  • WW II - Did you know you can still walk where PPG used to dump their rejected glass and pick up glass disks off the ground?  They were made in the Specialty Glass Division, Works 6, and were shipped elsewhere to be precision-ground into bomb sights for WWII bombers.
  • Overall - can you see modern society and industry's progress in the pictures?  Imagine if George Washington or Abraham Lincoln had a B24 Liberator bomber or a Huey helicopter gunship to fight their wars...
  • Also in town:  You can pick up a brochure on The Kittanning Walking Tour at the Tourist Bureau and, while walking along N. Water St., imagine the industrial leaders and business tycoons who lived in the big houses along the river.
